Jantar Mantar Varanasi

Jantar Mantar is a popular and well-known place in Varanasi. It is situated above the high water level of Ganges, on the roof of the Man Mahal Palace, near to Dashashwamedha Ghat. It is 7 km from Banaras Hindu University and 6 km from the Varanasi railway station. This astonishing place illustrates the advancements of science and astrology in India. This place was built in order to see the exact time as well as movements of planet and stars through advance mathematics, statistics and astrology. This monument has specialty to forecast the solar and lunar eclipses along with sun declination and is also a great place for all the architects, astronomers and engineers who comes and study it.

Jantar Mantar Varanasi Location

Due to its variety of collection of instruments, Jantar Mantar is also famously called by the name “Yanthra Mandir”. A visit to this place will showcase its visitor a sense of imperial architecture and the presence of science and technology which are being used since the 17th century. There are other Jantar Mantar as well which is situated in New Delhi and Jaipur. Compared to both, Jantar Mantar Varanasi is less equipped but it has distinctive equatorial sundial which other Jantar Mandar doesn't have.

Even today its calculations are almost in alignment with the modern technological instruments and can assist in predicting the motion and speed properties of the various planets and stars. There are many instruments present in Jantar Mantar Varanasi which is known colloquially and these are of significant importance attached to it; they are famously called  Disha Yantra, Digansha Yantra, Samrat Yantra,  Krantivritta Yantra, Prakash Yantra, Narivalaya dakshin, Chakra Yantra, Dhruva Yantra, Ram Yantra,  uttar gola and many more.

Amazing to find the usage of these instruments like Disha Yantra is used to find direction of pole, Digansha Yantra is used to check the horizontal angle of the stars, Laghu Samrat Yantra and Samrat Yantra are significant and used to obtain time, declination and hour angle of the stars, Chakra Yantra is has importance to find the real declination of stars and satellites such as Sun, Moon as well as their distance in time on the meridian, Uttar Gola and Narivalaya Dakshin are important to obtain the exact location of the stars which is again used to find means whether they are in the Northern or Southern hemisphere. Similarly  to know the altitude of the stars on the meridian, here we have  Dakshinobiti Yantra.

This magnifient monument was built in 1737 by King Jai Singh from Jaipur. He was so much fascinated with astronomy, science and technology that not one but five Jantar Mantar established by him in five different cities (from year 1727 to  year1734) in Varanasi, Delhi, Jaipur, Ujjain and Mathura. These monuments are now managed by government of India and come under historical monuments.

One can easily reach Jantar Mantar via auto-rickshaws or taxis; photography is also allowed inside the premises.
